Heavy Duty Compressors for Tire Inflation

VIAIR Corporation

VIAIR offers the most comprehensive line of fractional horsepower DC oil-less air compressors and air accessories for on-road, off-road, and industrial markets. Since 1998 our quality engineered compressors have become the industry standard for automotive aftermarket applications worldwide.

VIAIR 300p-450p

VIAIR's heavy duty portable tire inflators can be used on any vehicle with a 12v battery source and are designed for tires ranging from 33" to 42" diameter.

These compressors are suitable for both on-road and off-road vehicles.

VIAIR’s Automatic Tire Inflatiors make tire filling simple! While most portable air compressors must be turned off between tire fills and checking tire pressure, the Automatic compressors only operate while the trigger on the inflation gun is pulled. This will certainly save you much needed time, making the overall process of filling your tires seem effortless.

For those in the off-road segment, airing down tires allows for better traction while off-roading. Once your tires need to get back to their normal pressures, you simply hook the compressor up to your battery, and fill them to the recommended on-road pressure your vehicle suggests.

For those in the on-road segment, proper tire inflation is very important because it helps keep your tires lasting longer, it's better for gas mileage, and overall makes for a better ride while keeping you safe on the road.

Short version....
I bought this to use with my 31 ft. Class C motorhome and found that it really was not suitable for that application.
The air line is too short and the type of chuck (locking and non-interchangeable) does not work well for dually tires. For cars, trucks, SUVs and other vehicles, this product should work well.
I want to be clear that my bad experience with the product was the result of my choosing the wrong product and then trying to force it to do what it isn''t suited to do.

Long version...
Bought this in an attempt to go cheaper than the 400P Auto RV version. When I aired up my front tire, it worked like a charm. It got the tire from 70 to 80 psi in less than a minute. However, when I tried to air up an inside dually tire, things went very wrong. With the locking chuck, the only way you''ll get to the inside dually is with an air stem extension..which I had. Although the coiled line is listed as 30 ft, you really can''t get anywhere near that distance because of the coiling. I had to pull it a little tight to get it to the rear tires. I clamped the chuck on the stem extension and let go of it to go turn the unit on. When I got back to the rear tire, I could hear air leaking. When I grabbed the line and chuck to disconnect it, the stem extension pulled free of the tire and the tire deflated. So, basically, the tension of the coiled line was enough to break off the tire stem.
Great, I pulled the inside dually off and headed to Pep Boys to get the tire repaired. While I was there, I figured I''d just buy a longer non-coiled air line and a different chuck and make that work. That also did not end well.
Attempting to air up the rear tire again (and teach my son how to do it at the same time) I let the compressor run too long. It became (predictably) very hot. The heat caused my brand new air line to fail at the compressor end...POP!.
Lessons learned:
Coiled lines are fine, as long as you have plenty of length to service your vehicle. Otherwise, they''re gonna cause stress on your valve stems if they are clipped or screwed on.
Duty cycles of air compressors should never be exceeded (duh!) and an automatic compressor that only runs when air is actually flowing will go a long way to keeping the compressor from overheating.
If you have a long vehicle, or one with dually tires, step up and buy the more suitable version of this product. The Viair 40047 400P-RV Automatic.

Final tally?
No loss on the compressor because I''ve exchanged it with amazon and my new 4009_RV Automatic version is on the way.
I lost a couple of hours of work in the Arizona sun changing the dually, the cost of chucks and connectors I bought for my failed work around and $20 to have the tire repaired. I did get my money back on the air line, though I would not have blamed them for not refunding that to me.
Basically, I''m out $50 and hours of work because I tried to save $100...that I''m gonna end up spending anyway.

CONVENIENCE! I recently decided that I wanted to start doing some Off-Road/Overland exploration. This newe lifestyle opened my eyes to new things to worry about, and new ways to remedy those worries. The Viair 400P Compressor Kit is a great option for folks who need lots of air on the go. This unit makes easy work of the filling process and gets you back on the road in less than 10 minutes (ex. raising pressure from 15psi up to 40psi). Compact isnt the word I would use to describe this unit, there are other options on the market that are smaller and as effective. The difference between the Viair options and its competitors is price. This setup is at the top of the list for Bang for your Buck. It''s small enough to keep in your vehicle 24/7, and powerful enough for most needs. Need to air up a Basketball, or an RV tire, this unit can handle it. I plan to permanently Mount this unit in my 2018 4Runner, it is affordable enough to justify buying a separate unit to each vehicle I own. Minimal assembly required, and simple enough for anyone to use.

Bought a 400p, turns out the fitting that goes on the stem is way too big to fit on the stem due to my wheel design. Reached out to Viairs customer support, recommended I buy a 6ft extension - what a freaking hoaky set-up having to piece something together. Poor fitting at the intermediate connection...again,hoaky.

Well I recently purchased the 00032 air down kit. The fitting works and fit my stems well allowing ease of use. Well I got interested so I looked into the continuous fitting that was installed on both, turns out I can swap out that brass fitting from 0032 with the chuck on the end of the supplied air hose from the 400p and be golden.

I wish Viair was more in tune with their products and were able to figure out this quick fix for me the first time. So I reached back out to them to let them know my findings and asked if they can sell me just the brass fitting from the air down gauge, apparently they don''t sell individual pieces. So now I need to buy another air down kit, remove the fitting and install onto the 400p air hose. The fact they don''t sell individual pieces also doesnt comfort me much in the event I need a new part under warranty...

Overall
The 400p itself works fine, not super quick but gets the job done. Rated as such due to Viairs customer support experience and their lack of product knowledge.

So a few years back I purchased an off brand of small portable air compressor. It lasted a while. A trip to the desert, a year of airing up a 300 dollar tire that couldn''t be patched because name brand tire dealer doesn''t know what a large patch is, and it ran like that for some time.
On a recent trip to the beach, in 70 degree weather it crapped out. Smoked. Burned to a cinder and didn''t blow the fuse?
I bit the bullet. Purchased the 400P.
Night and Day difference. Air up is less than half the time. Heat, while any compressor will generate it, is managed well with the duty cycle. QUIET! The el-cheapo was louder than the vehicle, running, and I have a chopped exhaust with a shorty.
Accessories... well I don''t plan on using it for balls or a mattress. But they are free.
Cord, not a fan of the coils, but you have to make a sacrifice for compact storage. Plenty of length for a full size truck.
Cool air down feature for the perfectionist. I like it. I also have another tool for this, but it''s an option.
The gauge is close. About 2 pounds low. It isn''t NASCAR or a spaceship. It will get me home.
The bag. Time will tell. It works for carrying everything and keeping it in one place. Zippers and snaps will probably go, but it will be a while. Bag is lined. Probably rain resistant. As long as I don''t submerge the snorkel it should be ok.
Overall, very impressed with how small, fast, powerful, and put together the unit is. Has some weight. This one is a keeper, and cost is decent enough to put 1 in each vehicle.

This works fast and well compared to my old portable tank/compressor. Its my fault that I bought this model that does not have the automatic shutoff feature. To get an accurate reading as to how much air is in the tire, you have to walk back to the unit to shut off the compressor, walk back to the tire to read the pressure and then walk back to the unit and turn it on again if you need more air, walk back to the unit to inflate it more or disconnect, then move to next tire. While you are filling it the tire gauge reads higher and you have to guess how much air is in the tire and if you have enough experience with it you can come close enough. SO, the way I have to fill the four tires accurately on my camper is to disconnect when I think its close and I have my trusty digital tire gauge to tell me what it actually is without having to go to the compressor and turn it off. If you were smart enough to get the automatic feature you would not have to do it this way. Its a beating to get up and down at least 8 times just to top off your tires. All in all the tire gauge is useless for me and meant only for emergency use to get you to someplace where you can accurately fill your tires. Also irritating is the hose supplied is not standard and you can not use standard air hose attachments and chucks etc. IMHO you should buy a viair model with auto shutoff. Viair compressors are great, but some models are worthless for RVrs and for those who are unable to get up and down to shut off the compressor during fills just to see if you have the correct pressure. As far as keeping the engine running while in use, if you have an RV it can''t be too long of a distance from your truck battery to the RV back tires so I usually connect to the RV battery and if its on charge that''s ok, so far. Eventually I''ll get a better air compressor for garage use and hopefully only have to use this while on the road.
UPDATE: I''ve had this for a couple of years. Its lasted well but without much use. Everything above still applies. I would not recommend this as it has no auto shutoff.

Quiet, plenty of air, nice carry case. My only gripe with this compressor is the angled air chuck. The metal valve stems on my truck extend at an odd angle. Because of this, the combination chuck/deflator barely fit and leaked regardless of how I tried to install it. I ended up replacing it with a different air chuck.

Also.....I''d rather have more heavy duty power cord than air hose. It makes more sense to bring the pump to the spot you need the air than to try and stretch the hose halfway around the truck. This is especially true since the power switch is on the pump. I may upgrade the power cable with some 12 or 10awg zip cord sometime in the future.

There is a lot to like about this compressor, and I say that having installed an ARB CKMTA12 ''12V'' On-Board Twin High Performance Air Compressor in my camper van. The VIAR was to be primarily for use with a 4Runner but easily transferred to any other car. However, even with the stock wheels on my 2018 Off-Road Premium 4Runner, the business end of the hose has a number of problems. The right angle valve attachment gizmo that locks onto the valve stem forces the hose toward the center of the wheel making it hard to read the gauge and operate the deflator. But what really irks me is that to measure the pressure accurately you have to go over to the compressor, turn it off, return to the tire to read the gauge, and then go back to the compressor again if more air is needed. Do that for each tire and you will see what I mean---a very poor arrangement. The compressor power cord is just long enough to set the compressor on the ground in front of the vehicle so going back to the compressor N times to get all tires set up is just too inconvenient. My solution was to replace the outlet plug with a Universal type quick release like pretty much any general purpose compressor has. Then it is just a matter of getting a standard coil hose and a pressure gauge that works like you want, i.e. like press the trigger and fill the tire, release the trigger to read the tire pressure accurately, and press a button to let air out. With this mod when I am home I can grab my tool compressor or the VIAIR and inflate my bike or car tires. The picture shows what I did and includes a nylon strap handle as the original has to come off to make the modification, and the compressor can get hot.

After paying $2 to inflate 4 tires at a gas station decided to buy my own inflator. After weighing cost/benefit options chose the Viair 400P. Initially balked at the price but I hate crappy products. Any worry about my choice disappeared with a thorough inspection. Buying online can be a crapshoot but this unit is quality built. Bag is medium grade and could use a third small compartment for filters and extras but a minor issue, also the instructions are in tiny print and hard to read for us old geezers. Showed the 400P to my mechanic and he was very impressed. His first comment was wow even the hose is high quality! Never thought I''d be excited to inflate tires but using a quality tool like this is a pleasure. This pump is fast, easy to use and has a nice sound to it. The pressure gauge as others have noted did not seem accurate. An issue for cars with short valve stems is the horizontal inflator chuck won''t fit unless you have enough clearance above wheel cover surface. I bought a 6" flexible valve extension which solves the problem. Read some reviews complain of the 8'' power cord as too short. Easy hack is use your jumper cables as extensions. A decent 16'' 4 gauge cable will triple your power reach. Saves moving back and forth to turn pump on/off when filling. Also, buy a spare 40 amp fuse JIC.

The product arrived well packaged and easy instructions. The carry case is extremely well made with separate pockets for the compressor and bits. Connecting to the battery is easy and the hose is more than long enough for my 20 ft camper. It works well and is accurate. One odd thing which could be a safer feature or it assumes that we have long arms is the positioning of the on/off switch. When the compressor is connected to the battery and the hose to the back tyre the pressure gauge is near the tyre and the on off switch on the compressor??? I switched it on briefly walked to the back cane back etc. Now it could be that there is an on off lever or attachment to regulate pressure near the gauge but I haven’t got one. Maybe a safety feature???? I still like it though. Solidly made. Easily portable.

This unit uses alligator clamps to connect to the battery for power, unlike cheaper ones that plug into the accessory outlet (cig. lighter), so no more blown accessory fuses. It also has an easily replaceable air filter, so the compressor should last a long, long time. If you need a strong, reliable compressor, take a good look at this one.
