Not a wide variety of decor styles photographed: mostly mid century and boho

I follow Emily''s blog and could not wait to buy this book. However, after reading it cover to cover, I was mildly disappointed. She has a quiz for what style you are, and then proceeds to have almost all photographs (however gorgeous) mostly in the mid century modern, or boho style. There isn''t much of any of the others. If she is so talented, why can''t she feature a cabin in the woods styled up, or a cottage home, or traditional house? Isn''t there anything else to decorate with besides books, leather mid century chairs, fig leaf plants, and naked human art?

I should have trusted my initial feeling when I saw the preview images before buying. It is, as someone else noted, more of a book on how to arrange a space for a good photographic image. I couldn''t imagine living in one room pictured. On a positive note, there are some nice color schemes and art. The style quiz, however, is a complete waste of time, with the answers making no sense at all. I will probably give this to someone younger who might be able to utilize the ideas. Style does not need to be defined. Buy and live with what you love, and edit out some of the old to make way for the new as time goes on. That works naturally.

I''ve been a fan of Emily Henderson since she won Design Star on HGTV years ago so I was happily anticipating her book and wasn''t disappointed since her and I have a very similar style. I find inspiration and ideas all through this book but I can see how those with a minimal aesthetic or more traditional style would be disappointed. Emily''s style definitely leans to mid-century and boho, as many reviewers have pointed out, and many of the rooms she designs and showcases fall into one or both of those categories. The inside look at this book on Amazon features many pictures that are true to those styles so If you aren''t a fan of what you see there, don''t buy it...there''s a lot more of the same on the inside pages. One of the things I like best about Emily is that she sometimes thinks "outside of the box" in some of her design choices and I enjoy the unexpected quirkiness she can bring to a room. I like a bit of "organized clutter" on a bookshelf and think a coffee tablescape is a great way to make a living room more inviting. If you are into that, Emily offers some great tips. The only thing about this book that I didn''t care for was the style test. If styling or designing a home is your vocation, it might be a good tool for evaluating a potential clients'' style but it didn''t help me and was a wasted chapter in an otherwise very informative book.

I was excited to get this book, but was disappointed after reading it. It was (as other reviewers have pointed out) too focused on boho and mid century modern. Not enough variety of style. (Which reminds me: the style quiz at the beginning made zero sense in terms of how it was scored.) But, my biggest complaint about the book is that the rooms and vignettes felt overly cluttered to me. I''m certainly no minimalist, but too many of the spaces she photographed were filled with crap! I mean, who dusts all of those tchotchkes?? Too many just looked messy! The kindle version, though, was formatted nicely.

Wonderful book! I can''t get enough of it. It has introduction to styles for beginners like me. No obscure names and unknown words, she explains everything. There are many helpful tips on how to combine textures, choose bright colors vs tonal palette, how to show off what you have, and make it feel like "your" space.
It also helps you determine your style. I agree that the quiz makes no sense, but I could go through the list of styles and pick what I like about every one of those. It has plenty of inspiring photos of interiors with explanations of how it was done. It does have a lot of mid-century modern examples, but those are examples and I took them as guides, not as "go do this to your room". Overall, it helped me relax my "every surface needs to be empty and clean" standards and gave me a sense of how to make my house a cozy place.

This book is divided into two sections – Toolkit and Secrets for Every Room. I found little for inspiration or help in either section.

The Toolkit starts with a survey that can help you define your own style. For myself, I found that 18 out of 20 questions were answered as ‘none of the above’. Also, the questions included very specific references that people may simply not be aware of. Following the survey she provides a one or two page description for a dozen styles. I could not relate to any of her descriptions or pictures, and would not recognize my own design style for any of them. As a reference, I consider my style as traditional-eclectic. By this I mean that I have a strong preference for traditional decorating, however, I have multiple other styles included in my home: country (currently trying to reduce but not remove), Arts and Crafts, Mid-Century Modern (inherited), Glam (not necessarily Modern Glam), and Transitional. Neither Arts and Crafts nor Transitional styles are mentioned in this book, and I could reference several others that are also missing. The result for me was that there was nothing in this section that would help me identify my preferred styles. Luckily I already have some awareness! I found little of help in the rest of the Toolkit section – most of it was very basic and I think there are other books that do a better job of defining use of color, focal points, and mood. I did find her information on organizing a vignette and her various examples were interesting to look at and read about. In general, the photos in the book are very well done.

Following the Toolkit, the Secrets for Every Room is broken into 4 chapters: Living Rooms, Kitchen & Dining, Bedroom, and Entryway / Corners / Creative spaces (last three combined into one chapter). As mentioned in previous reviews almost all of her photos are mid-century modern or boho. Based on my preferred styles, I found very little to relate to and quickly paged through those sections.

If your style runs more towards mid-century modern or boho, you may love this book. If your preferences run more towards other styles, you may find little in this book to interest you.

The photos alone are worth the purchase price of this kindle edition. I deeply appreciate the living room section where the author shows one sofa in several different design styles. If she''d done more of this (perhaps for each room), I would have happy given 5 stars and more enthusiasm. I really like the fact that the interiors are not stuffy, snobby or over-styled. The rooms make me think that fun was had while decorating and the spaces are approachable - as in, these spaces look like someone actually LIVES in them just the way they are in the photos. Super refreshing! The looks are a mix of styles, there are no home store floor sets here - thank gawd! If you are looking for fussy traditional this book is not for you. If you''re looking for youthful, fun functionality that''s inviting - get this book. She will shown you how to confidently decorate a space you really enjoy living in (and she shares a list of stores and her go-to paint colors).

Love this book. great for people interested in making their homes prettier. The author seems very sweet and nice - I thought she was British but turns out she is American. Her style is not for everyone though. I would say quite of an emphasis on vintage stuff - flea markets and antique shops are essentials for getting to the kind of style she promotes.

I bought this book because it was well reviewed but it was the wrong choice for me as I like uncluttered, fairly minimalist decor which is antithesis of what is presented in this book. Every available surface is covered with vignettes of mismatching and to me discordant items, some of them frankly quite bizarre to look at. There were too many objects and too many patterns. Why would you want a row of four chairs at the end of your bed or a weird looking plants encased in an enormous glass cases? There is some good advice on colour and especially the use of tone, and high and lowlights and a quiz on your design style, I came in as liking a ''Zen'' style of decor, which is pretty accurate and is not what this book is about! If you like busy, patterned and a ''maximalist'' look, thIs may be the book for you.

I simply love this book and have already read through it several times! The photography is gorgeous and the tips are very helpful and creative. Emily encourages you to mix things up when decorating your home and I love the eclectic and creative look she has given the rooms that she has included on the book. While the book gives example of how to create great interior shots for for instance a blog, these tips are easily transferred to creating a stylish and well presented home.
