I''ts a really nice light, if you get a true Streamlight. 3 settings: Hi, strobe, and low. Hi is bright enough to easily shine across my backyard about 100 feet long. Small enough so it just barely sticks out from my closed fist when held, just enough to use as a strike weapon if needed. Great for EDC. The clip is the key - lets you attach to your cap visor.

The problem: I''ve bought 5 of these now. Two of them: randomly they would not turn on, when they did work, would not shine brightly, and would make a very soft but high pitched noise. These were counterfeit, but by the time I had used them enough to figure this out, many months had passed, could not return. My last purchase 8/28/18 luckily a real streamlight arrived and works great - below is the list of things you have to check right away, and if these are present, then send it back - see attached photos:

    Signs of counterfeit Streamlight:
    1. ten-tap programming does not work --> counterfeit
    2. unscrew the end cap: if O-ring is BLACK (instead of orange) ---> counterfeit
    3. take the end cap off, remove battery - if there is NO SPRING in the front end of the flashlight, where it should contact the battery, --->counterfeit
    4. end cap with grid texture pattern instead of the "SL" streamlight logo ---> counterfeit

    See attached photos.

The only reason surefire can charge so much is because people are willing to pay insane prices for anything that gets a military contract due to the implied prestige and the feeling they get LARPing as their favorite DELTA operator.
Anyone familiar with military contracts knows that the highest bidder doesn''t get the contract. It''s often a mix of cheap and reasonably reliable and even then not always. Surefire is not the best light manufacturer. They''re great lights to be sure but they''re overpriced by 300%. The streamlight is high quality and most LE or civilians won''t put this light in military use conditions. Though streamlights likely would survive the same use surefire does. If you''re willing to pay the premium to pretend you''re Pat Mac then go with surefire. If you''re a reasonable and frugal civilian who still wants great weapon accessories then buy this light with confidence.

Small, bright, lightweight, programmable. Perfect EDC light. There really isn''t a reason/excuse to not carry a flashlight - everyday. The ProTac 1L-1AA is a great flashlight and I think it will end up passing up the ProTac 1L and 2L models in popularity. If you were like me, you are wondering - "how can a flashlight take a small CR123A and a AA battery?". When you unscrew the cap, you will notice the AA battery slides down into a retainer that has a spring on the bottom side. The AA will protrude out of the end of the flashlight, but you just compress the battery down as you screw on the end cap. Easy. The CR123A''s fit flush. It''s a great concept. Ten-Tap programmable so you can run it in different modes: High, Low/High, or High/Strobe/Low. Just momentary press the end cap 9 times and press to click on the 10th. Great flashlight.

    *UPDATE*
It has been one year since this review. I have carried this light in my left back pocket daily. A few drops, scuffs and scratches but it is holding up just fine. Wrapped 14" inches of duct tape around the middle because duct tape is always good to have with you. And, it adds a little grip too. It''s a great light.

All hype and marketing from the other light manufacturers aside, this Streamlight HLX is the best long gun light there is at this price range and feature set. Period.

    Why. Pay. More?

    Light:
The options and 10 tap programmable features are a win. I prefer the low/high setting. This light is bright AF on high. The low setting is great for indoors and training.

    Tape Switch:
Personally I really like the momentary tape and constant on button option. That''s definitely a win.

    Picatinny light mount:
The mount is just OK. Slot it where you need it, twist it down tight, forget about it. For a better mount option, go with the Arisaka brand picatinny Gear Sector Offset Scout Mount. They also make M-Lok and KeyMod mounts as well, all for <$50

    Switch mount:
Streamlight knows their tape switch is BS. The two rubber picatinny switch mounts and zip tie system are ok for light duty and range use, but for serious life and liberty use, don''t bet your life on them. The only solid option is to go Cloud Defensive, $80. Buy once, cry one - get both as a combo deal from Cloud Defensive and be done with it.

    Conclusion:
The kit is a solid 4 stars. Streamlight kept the price down by not adding in a more solid tape switch mount. Sometimes aftermarket accessories is the way to go. I highly recommend Streamlight for all of your weapon and pocket light needs.

Update 5/2021. Still using all kinds of batteries in the light and it works fine. I have carried other lights that I have grown to prefer, but this little guy keeps popping into the rotation every once in a while.
    *******

This is a great light for several reasons. I keep one in all the cars with a cr123 in them for emergency needs. They just work when you need them. Nice and small, also carry one on me or in my briefcase.

It takes at least 5 different types of battery that I have found so far. I know that streamlight specifically states not to use Rcr123a rechargeables, but they work fine. Even better is that it runs on 14500 batteries. Now you do lose the low brightness when using rechargeables, it’s more like bright and slightly less bright. Strobe still works fine. But it is brighter than using cr123s for sure. I’ve done some pretty extensive testing with this and have run into no reliability issues yet. So you can run off 1AA, 1AAA, Cr123, Rcr123a, and 14500.

In my testing a 800Mah 14500 will run bright for about an hour. Then it will diminish from about 280 lumens to about 50 lumens (as unscientificly measured against other flashlights of known lumen output) over the next 30 minutes. I stop testing at 1.5 hours, but expect it would just continue to dim and probably give you another 15-30 minutes of useable light. The light gets just as warm as it does with a Cr123 and then cools as the lumens decrease.

The best part is that as compared to my Streamlight 2L-X it has slightly better throw. The 2L-X most likely still puts out more lumens, but it is hard to tell in the dark. They look nearly identical. This light just throws slightly farther and still has great spill.

This light is nice and small and the clip is perfect for a hat brim or a pocket. The emitter is a bit more neutral white, but still a cooler color. Certainly not as yellow as a zebra headlamp in neutral. It is a nice bright neutralish cool white.

I suspect streamlight doesn’t advertise the battery capability because they want to keep selling their Cr123 batteries. That or what I’m doing will kill the emitter quicker. Maybe both. Regardless, I have a bunch of these little lights as they have become my favorite.

Stash them with Cr123s for emergencies, EDC/ use with a 14500 and carry a Cr123 as a back up.
I’ve had luck with this but don’t recommend it since you “could” fry your light. Hasn''t happened to me yet. But just to be safe....

I carried a Streamlight ProTac 1L-1AA every day for about a year until it ended up at the bottom of a bay in Florida. I became very familiar with the feel and function of this little light, and I loved it, so I immediately went shopping for a new one. I checked in a few stores with no luck then I found this one on Amazon. When the light arrived, I immediately knew I''d been had. This light is much lighter than the real ProTac. Also, the "Ten Tap" function is nonexistent. This light has 3 modes: bright, dim, and strobe, and there is NO way to program it any different. Turn the light on and it''s bright. Turn it off and back on and it''s dim. Do it again and it strobes... annoying! I may have the order mixed up, but you get the idea. Do not be suckered in by the cheap price. There is a reason this light is $30-40 cheaper than a real Streamlight ProTac 1L-1AA, and the reason is because this light is counterfeit junk.

I bought the HL-X. Mounted it on the right side of my 10.5" pistol at 90°. Super bright. Programming is a great feature, I chose low/high. My issue is the mounting options. Unless you spend another $80 on a Cloud Defensive mount (which only works on a monolithic top rail) you are pretty much stuck with the included rubber mounts or the 3M tape, which isn''t really an option. The rubber mounts have front to back play which kinda sucks for a $100 light.

However, the tape switch has two small holes for screwing it to a wood or plastic handguard. My particular handguard only has 5 slot rails at the ends on top, but is M-Lok across the top. So what I did was drill out the holes to 3/16" so I could fit some M-Lok screws and T-nuts. This allowed me to M-Lok mount the pressure switch to the top of my handguard securely with a very low profile. I was also able to route the wire so it''s protected and out of the way.

So if you buy this light be aware you may have to get creative with your mounting solution unless you want to spend addition money.

The cost of this is ridiculous for what it is and I don''t know how it is justified. This is another flashlight I will give away. I thought Streamlight made better lights...You can pay less and get much better flashlights.

I am returning this flashlight while writing this 5 stars review. Don''t get me wrong; it is a great product but just not for me. As for the pros, it is brighter and almost has the double candela output (candela is like the "resolution" of the flashlight, it is the thing that controls how far a light could reach, and IMO, it is a way more important than just lumens ) than most surefire counterparts, but it is too long and too big for a spec-ops SBR setup. I was a contractor and now an instructor who is training a lot under night visions, so for me, I have to run IR aiming lasers on most of my rifles, and it is very important for those rifles to shoot completely ambitious by using both white light and night visions. Unfortunately, I''d like to put all my accessories in the front of the rail, and because the size and weight, I can not access to the top button of my IR device when shooting left handed, and because I am using the surefire warcomp as my muzzle device, it is no way for me to grab directly on that flashlight as a secondary grip. So, do I love it? Yes! Would I purchase it again? Probably never. However, for the most people who is using longer rifles or do not use IR aiming devices, please give it a go!
