Sheku Kanneh-Mason was scheduled to perform with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in the last concert of its 50th anniversary season. Then he got a call from Meghan Markle. His schedule instantly changed. At the Royal Wedding, he played three songs. His performance was seen around the world by as many as 2 billion people. He killed. And… oh… he’s 19.

This wasn’t a small moment for a kid who was born in 1999. But it was far from his first major triumph. In 2016, when he won the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year award, he was the first black musician to win since its launch 38 years earlier. In 2015, with his siblings, he competed on “Britain’s Got Talent.” He called that “a good experience for getting used to performing in front of lots of people, with cameras and interviews. When it came to BBC Young Musician, there were fewer cameras so I wasn’t fazed at all.”

He’s unfazed for good reason. Most of the seven children in his family play music, and not casually. “I go in my bedroom, my brother goes in his bedroom, and then the girls fight over the pianos,” he says. That commitment starts, of course, with his parents. “Every penny of our money goes on music,” his mother says. “We haven’t decorated for years. The tiles are coming off the roof. We never buy new clothes. I do the girls’ hair myself because it’s too expensive to take them to a salon. Our car is a wreck.”

The press makes a big deal of his race. His father’s family is originally from Antigua, his mother’s family is from Sierra Leone and Wales. Sheku simplifies his status: “I’m Welsh.” The rest is noise: “If a lot of people see a young black guy from a comprehensive school playing classical music, they’ll think that’s quite cool. My job is to just do a good performance.”

His first CD, “Inspiration, was recently released. It zoomed to number one on the UK classical albums chart; in February, it had been streamed 2.5 million times on Spotify. That number will now increase exponentially.

I must admit to having been a bit jaded before listening to this cd. Was all this praise truly warranted? I have to join the throng bestowing high accolades on this young man. I hear an old soul in his playing. He does Casals, Du Pre & Rostropovich proud, indeed. I hope the Duchess will continue to put her newly found celebrity to good use. She''s backed a winner here. My favorite pieces on the cd are the song of the birds & the nocturne from the Gadfly. Truly amazing colors in these performances. I''m waiting for the music from the royal wedding to arrive. More of Sheku''s stunning performances to enjoy. I''m sure I won''t be disappointed. Buy both cds straight away! I await his next cd with great anticipation.

Sheku''s Magic
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2018
Sheku put me under his spell at the Royal Wedding. As I listen to his CD I can imagine his face as he plays from the heart, and there I go again. As someone important once said (was it Rubenstein?) "No one would go to concerts if it wasn''t for the emotion."

Sheku Kanneh-Mason -- subject of the documentary ''Young Gifted & Classical -- The Making Of A Maestro'', Winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year 2016, BAFTA performer, and member of Chineke! Orchestra -- merits recognition. The CD''s packaging was a surprise as marketing with a red sticker affixed to the CD stating ''The cellist personally chosen by MEAGHAN MARKLE to play at the royal wedding'' is jarring at best.

The virtuostic passages are clear and concise. I found myself enjoying the entire CD!

For his first CD Sheku Kanneh-Mason has not opted for the obvious. Each of his choices pays homage to an artiste who has inspired him. Rostropovich led him to Shostakovich (the first concerto and the Gadfly nocturne). Casals is represented by two Catalonian pieces. He heard du Pre playing Le Cygne and she is also by chance named in Offenbach''s Jacqueline''s Tears. Guy Johnston, whose help and encouragement Sheku acknowledges, plays Casals'' Sardana with him.Another track is shared by three of his fellow students. The CBSO cello section is heard in four pieces whilst the whole orchestra, conducted by Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, accompanies Sheku in Shostakovich''s first cello concerto. You may or may not like this but the high quality of the performance is undeniable. The slow movement is hushed, delivered with gorgeous tone and very moving. The concerto is taken from performances in Birmingham and Nottingham. How did they even out the acoustics of two different concert halls? How did they eliminate the coughing and, especially, the applause, which must have been pretty shattering? Highly recommended. Do the public know that Sheku has given some of his concert fees to his old school to help with the music teaching?

This is the debut CD of a very fine young musician. It contains half a dozen short pieces arranged to showcase Sheku Kanneh-Mason''s talent and competence as a cellist - which it does admirably. It also gives Sheku the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities on the concert platform as a concerto soloist - in the piece he played to great acclaim in the BBC Young Musician of the Year final - the E flat Cello Concerto by Shostakovich. This disc also provides the debut recording of another young musical superstar - Sheku is accompanied by Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla conducting her excellent CBSO. Mirga''s accompaniment is flawless.

I love cello as an instrument. And his favorite cello players, Pablo Casals, Jacqueline Du Pre and Mstislav Rostropovich happen to be, also, my own. But unlike Du Pre and Rostropovich, I am familiar with Casals only through his performance of J.S. Bach''s solo cello suites for which I rate him as best, at par with Paul Tortelier and Yo-Yo- Ma. Though I find the specific recording as magnificent from beginning to end, still for reasons of discussion I wish to divide the disc broadly into two parts: the simpler one such as the folk songs and the varied, rich and complex one, in which the pride of place belongs to Shostakovitch''s Cello Concerto No.1. In the simpler one, I found the rendition as accomplished, seemingly effortless, unhurried, with a beautiful natural flow and a dream like character. But the real magic of the rendition came to its full fruition in Shostakovitch''s cello Concerto No.1 when it captured to perfection its varied character from its high complexity and intensity to its serenity and all its varied hues and moods. I felt that a cello star was born.

I surprised myself by enjoying this. I am more interested in musicians'' work than in their life-stories, so when family members, watching some very beautiful young woman doing something important with some decent chap, woke me up for "the bit you will enjoy" I was grumpily determined to not enjoy it at all. To my embarrassment and astonishment I really did enjoy Sheku''s contribution to proceedings. So I bought this, expecting to be disappointed, and I was wrong: there is nothing at all disappointing about this CD. Truth to tell Sheku is a very talented musician who must surely become a top performer on the instrument he has chosen. His technique is excellent and he manages to put individuality into the music he plays without trivialising it in any way. And someone has had the generosity and good sense to lend him a cracking cello. So I am glad a billion people around the world nosed in on whatever that beautiful young woman and that decent chap were doing: Sheku Kanneh-Mason deserves the attention he most surely received. This CD is worth a lot more than its price. Buy it! In the very unlikely event that you do not like it, be sure it will be turned into a decent amount of cash as soon as it gets put on the shelf of any charity shop. In the modern style: "It''s a win-win situation". Or you can be an old Scrooge like me: save the music on an MP3 player, and then give the CD to the charity shop. Just try not to smirk before you get clear of the admiring, grateful, cooing you may receive from the good souls running the charity shop. (Really! Some of the immoral advice you get on anti-social media is beneath contempt.)
