From the Manufacturer

Moka is the Italian Way to Make Espresso

Authentic espresso is the heritage of the Italian culture and tradition, and the great Italian tradition of coffee making began with moka. Found in most Italian kitchens for more than half a century, moka produces an inherently aromatic espresso. It is more intense in flavor, and more pure in coffee taste. That is why generations of Italians have sworn by stovetop moka espresso makers.

In fact, in Italy every family owns at least two mokas. Used on the stovetop, the heat from the burner boils the water and directs it up through the ground coffee and into the receptacle, producing a perfect espresso every time.

Why an Electric Moka Espresso Maker? Although the traditional stovetop moka makes great espresso, people have been searching for a safe, convenient and easy-to-use alternative. The new six-cup machine embodies DeLonghi’s commitment to its Italian heritage and innovative kitchen design. The Electric Moka Espresso Maker is a modern-day, convenience-minded adaptation of a beloved Italian staple.

Electric Moka Espresso Maker Features:

  • 3- to 6-cup espresso capacity
  • Transparent Coffee Container lets you easily monitor the entire brewing process. And the durable container is easy-to-clean.
  • Filter Adapter allows you to choose 3 or 6 cups of espresso, so you can select the amount of espresso to make depending on the number of people you’re serving.
  • Automatic Shut-Off With Keep Warm Function keeps espresso hot for up to 30 minutes. And with automatic safety shut-off, your espresso will never burn or overflow.
  • Two-Level Safety System will automatically shut-off the machine when the unit is finished brewing and when the body is lifted from the base.
  • Cordless Operation with Detachable Base makes serving convenient and simple. You can bring your espresso right to the table.
  • On/Off Switch with Indicator Light Easy-to-use illuminated push-button control lets you know when the unit is in operation.
  • Pressurized Safety Valve ensures safe operation.
  • Aluminum Boiler is made of durable, high-quality aluminum. Count on getting great espresso for years to come.

How to Make the Perfect Italian Espresso in Just a Few Simple Steps:

  1. Fill the aluminum boiler with water.

  2. Fill the filter with ground coffee.

  3. Attach the transparent coffee container to the base.

  4. Plug in and switch the push button to the ON position.

This product does what it says -- HOWEVER, I am not about that plastic upper compartment. After multiple runs, I got the feeling that the difference in taste from a traditional moka pot wasn''t going away any time soon (-1 star for you, Delonghi. Plastic bad).

SO, I took the top compartment from my stove-top moka pot (Bialetti) and used it instead of the plastic one: works perfectly!

NOT that I''m recommending this hack: I can''t guarantee your pot won''t explode and turn your kitchen into a mini-Chernobyl. It works great for me, though.

The Alicia is a pretty net design for a coffee maker. I''m happy to see such electric moka pots on the market. I''ve always wanted a moka pot to use at the office, where there is no stove, so I decided to give the Alicia a try. Unfortunately, overall, I''m disappointed.

The Alicia does make good coffee. I want to make that clear first. It''s simple to operate as well. Fill the basket with about 22g of coffee (depending on roast), fill the bottom reservoir with water, then turn it on and wait for it to slow down the hissing/bubbling. The coffee comes out consistently with a mellow (but slightly burnt) flavor, which isn''t bad for a gadget like this.

But the product is suffering from some design problems that inhibit its potential.

1) There''s no thermostat. The electric heater boils the water, which isn''t good for a moka pot. Brews are too fast by comparison. You cannot do "low and slow" with this device like you would on a stove unless you babysit the unit and constantly flip the switch on and off to control the release of heat. If you don''t do this, the coffee comes out tasting a little burnt. Bummer. For comparison, this device, once heating the water, finishes a brew in about twenty seconds, which is too fast. Ideally with a moka pot you want that steam time to span several minutes. Low and slow.

2) Like a stovetop moka pot, there is no insulation around the bottom metal part of the pot. This is just crazy to me given this is an electric device. The lack of insulation around the bottom of the pot means you can''t easily unscrew the pot when it''s done brewing to dump out the coffee. So if you want to brew more than pot, you either need to wait for it to cool down to handle it safely or else come up with clever and potentially dangerous ways of unscrewing the two pieces (like running it under cold water to cool it down quickly, though I don''t know if doing this can damage the electrical contacts on the kettle).

3) It''s just not very big. Like with a normal moka pot, you can somewhat control the amount of coffee this produces by starting with more or less water. However, this one can''t hold very much water. This renders it incapable of brewing more than about eight ounces per brew. Comparatively, when I brew with an Aeropress, I use almost double the amount of coffee and produce a coffee concentrate more than twice as strong for large, sixteen to eighteen ounce cups. This was a bummer. It just can''t match the capacity of the Aeropress. You can view this either as, "It makes small cups," or as, "It makes weak coffee." Expect ~8 ounce cups if you prefer relatively strong coffee.

4) Fines are very small coffee grinds (like dust) that are produced when grinding coffee beans. They are caused by manufacturing inconsistencies in grinding mechanisms and the naturally chaotic process of grinding--that is, crunching beans down to small pieces. Any grinder will produce fines, and this pot, like a stovepot moka pot, lacks a filter fine enough to catch fines. When you combine this with the lack of temperature regulation on the unit, the excessively hot water ends up generating too much steam. This causes too much pressure inside the unit and pushes the fines in the coffee grounds up through the fountain. You''ll get various amounts of gunk in every cup. With a stovetop moka pot, you would avoid fines by using low heat and going slow so as not to produce too much pressure, but accomplishing that with this brewer requires a very manual process.

5) Parts of it are pretty inaccessible for cleaning. Particularly the top, plastic park. The metal base of the fountain creates a small space between the perimeter of the base and the perimeter of the outer wall of the pitcher. Coffee gets in that space when you brew, but there''s not a good way to get into that space for cleaning. Also the fountain. You''d need a special cleaning brush, like a pipe brush or a small bottle brush, to get in there. Since the filter in this unit is metal and not super fine, oils in the ground up coffee beans will be extracted during brewing and deposited on the walls of the brewer where coffee touches. Over time, those oils go rancid. Rancid oil is the main reason why brewed coffee at many restaurants tastes absolutely terrible. They don''t clean their machines well. This machine is virtually impossible to clean well, and over time, that will negatively affect the taste of the coffee it makes.

Overall, this device is significantly more complicated to operate than the Aeropress and fails to produce even equal quality results. Bummer. It was a fun experiment, but I won''t be using this and can''t recommend it for really any use case except novelty.

Mine doesn''t leak AT ALL. It heats up and starts brewing quickly and is much faster than the stove type at boiling the water. It shuts off the boiler when there is still a tiny bit (but negligible) amount of water left - it won''t completely dry out on the inside which helps prevent mineral scale and it also WON''T OVERHEAT YOUR COFFEE. You can turn it on and leave knowing when you come back you''ll have a hot cup of espresso rather than boiled coffee with scale on the bottom of the boiler and a ruined gasket. To me that''s a HUGE plus over the stove top models.

The espresso is very good. I can''t complain given the price. Recommend using quality pre-ground coffee ground specifically for espresso. Lavazza or Illy is what I use. If you use a cheap grinder to grind beans you''ll get poor results due to very small particles getting through the permanent filter into your cup and also clogging the filter.

As you can see below, initially I gave it 1 starts, although I felt like giving 0, if possible. I bought a Brika, and stopped using it. My wife rescued it, used a different formula, and reports that it makes one of the best coffees she has ever tried. To err is human, I rushed to make a horrible review before really giving it a real option tl prove itself.

The formula that my wife uses is: pour room temperature water (I used pre-heated), and three tablespoons of coffee (I filled it).

Me, I am very happy with my Brika, I do more of an espresso type of coffee, it''s great!

So, there you have, sorry Delonghi for my previous review. I would have given you 5 stars, but it comes with no real instructions.

Old Review
I prefer to limit my reviews to products that deserve 4 and 5 stars. However, the horrible flavor of the coffee made by this machine compels me to advise others: DO NOT BUY IT, MAKES HORRIBLE COFFEE. Truly believe that the comoany should discontinue this model until they can make whatever changes are needed to produce something at least drinkable.

We''ve had this moka maker for about two years. We brew three to four times daily as my wife prefers espresso over regular drip coffee. I would not consider us espresso connoisseurs, but we love the way this pot works. The carafe is pretty stained from all of the use, but the utility of the product is still as effective as the first day of use. I am surprised at how well it has held up. Our past experiences with steam and pump style machines had conditioned me to buying a new machine just about every year. I liked this so much that I bought a second one for my in-laws. Simple to use, durable, and makes a great cup of espresso!

Update: December 2016. We''ve had the moka pot for almost 3 years to the day. It has held up very well and I would conservatively estimate we have brewed in the neighborhood of 3,250 pots of moka. This is the only way we make coffee now. Between year 2 and 3 I replaced the original rubber gasket with a silicon one (that can be ordered on Amazon). This last month the carafe began a slow leak where the metal ring meats the plastic. It still heats and and brews, but if you forget and leave it you will end up with a puddle on the counter as it cools down. This unit has held up unbelievably well considering the amount of use/abuse it gets. I think I will retire the old girl and order a new one. I''m hoping my next one will be just as good as my first.

This is great for travel and safety concerns for traditional stove top users. I''m too lazy and the stove in my apartment is horrible and I burn the bottom of traditional Bialetti Moka Express pots. I tried my old Bialetti top that fits this model, but I prefer, for now, the plastic top included. The reviews are variable as we all use different coffee and prepare it differently. I use Lavazza Crema E Gusto Classico and keep the freezer cold enough to keep my supply fresh and potent. I use cream (2% milk) and Turbinado sugar.
I did an Americano brew and my usual straight over ice. I can get at least 3 servings out of a single use. I don''t go to coffee shops and I buy my supplies in bulk and so affordability is a key factor as well. So far, I have enjoyed the simple cleanup, convenience, safety, and versatility of this product.

My office has a professional Jura professional automatic sepresso/coffee machine and it brews a consistently great cup of espresso at a touch of a button. Good and convenient as this machine is, I still fancy an espresso made in a stovetop espresso maker. And this is where the DeLonghi electric espresso machine comes in handy in the office. It functions just like a typical stove top unit, but I can use it in the office without a range. The top half is made of see-through plastic so I can see the espresso percolate. Usually, I switch off the unit when the top is half full and let the residual heat in the element to finish the brewing process. The espresso is slightly foamier when brewed this way. Overall, I am happy with the purchase even though it takes longer to set up and clean the machine than drinking the coffee, but it is worth it.
