Ok look...this is a great movie; make no mistake. I saw this with my firefighter dad when I was 13 or 14 and watched it a hundred times until I actually became a fireman myself. Watch it for Russel and Glenn''s acting, as they both do a great job with the material given, and storyline, but don''t for a second watch it and say "This is how it really is"...cuz it isn''t. You don''t walk around a chemical plant when it''s on fire like you''re looking for the perfect car in a crowded new car lot. You don''t fight 3 alarm warehouse fires that are flashing on you and say "dig in" like some Porkchop Ridge Gregory Peck; this ain''t war, it''s fighting fire and fire doesn''t play by the rules of how tough or aggressive another person is. You fight fire like a cowboy you''ll be a dead cowboy. Deniro and Glenn save this movie with their respective portrayels of inspector Rimgale and Axe from a fireman perspective because they balance Russel''s unrealistic cowboy-up firehouse Lieutenant and Baldwin''s unsympathetic and gutless portrayel of a probie. Ladder 49 is much morr realistic, even though it, too, has plenty of "yeah, right" Hollywood moments. Honestly though, it''s a movie. If you want realistic, in all honesty, watch "Emergency!," the 70''s series, which is as close to real as it gets. If you want a good movie that''s exciting with a great cast, watch Backdraft. Just don''t for a second think it''s realistic.

Ron Howard pays tribute to how dangerous firefighters'' work is constantly, while also creating a unique arsonist investigation thriller. The fire is real for most of the movie and the special effects still look realistic. Non-stop action and intense situations leads Backdraft to memorable greatness. Howard directs Backdraft with a sincere respect and reverence for firefighters and it shows with every scene. You understand the sacrifice firefighters and their families make in the service of their community''s safety.

Backdraft has one of cinema''s greatest casts. Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rebecca De Mornay, and Donald Sutherland round out Backdraft''s stellar ensemble. Everyone is believable and plays a key role for either the narrative or character development.

Hans Zimmer''s score is quite unnerving and intense. He sets the tone and atmosphere for each scene with a suspenseful soundtrack or an inspiring theme to jump into the fire with these characters.

All in all, Backdraft is as emotionally harrowing and scary as when it first released. Check out Backdraft.

Picture quality gets a nice upgrade as well, uniforms are shaper and the fire is so impressive. CGI fire looks very cartoony in 4k but real fire is amazing and becomes a supporting actor.

However it had to happen this way though very sad. The love of two brothers. though conflictual throughout the movie- in the end- reigns with glory at the end. My had is off the the writers, producers and the Director! They do not make movies like this anymore.

He captures the beauty and the horror of fires. He makes fires into a character in his movie

And he captures the true heroism of the every day firefighter .

User impressive achievements, but what makes the movie a great movie is the way that Howard and Donald Sutherland created one of the most memorable characters I''ve ever seen in a movie. Sutherland portrays an arsonist.

The two of them tapped into Sutherland''s potential for playing evil characters, a potential that is very rarely used .

There is a lot of cheese melting here. It''s pure melodrama, in slow mo. Watch it for the fire fighting and camaraderie, but beware the forced romantic and thriller subplots. This came out right after Silence of the Lambs so the "Ronald" subplot is particularly whorish.

It''s always good to see Scott Glenn and Jt Walsh, but Jennifer Jason Leigh and Willy Baldwin have zero chemistry.

I saw this film thirty years ago, and it was terrible then, and it still has so many problems. Whose story is this? Why does the fire bug version of Hannibal Lecter appear? Why does Robert DeNiro, an arson investigator give the graveside service at the end? There are more false notes in this film that in a seventh grade orchestra, and every time the movie goes for something emotional, the most ridiculous events occur. Confusing motives, truly bad dialog, and no sense of what this movie is about make Backdraft into a tedious experience. Watch Rescue Me, the Dennis Leary series set in a post 9-11 firehouse for something that at least doesn''t take itself seriously.

Some of these big budget films simply have it all, which is mind you, included in salaries as well as special effects no doubt, but a film with a top notch all star cast, with pyrotechnic effects that are produced by the best around of that day and with a damn decent script and a strong story driving it, (in this case, a mysterious, but clever arsonist who is driven by anger and a point to make, nuff said), and a bit of a sibling rivalry at its centre, then you get an epic classic like this. Kurt Russell''s career has been pretty consistent over the years, he hasn''t done much that I think he isn''t going to be proud of at the end of his career, (although I''m not sure if he has ever played a villain), and when you include the classic failures, like The Thing, now considered by most to be one of the finest sci fi horrors ever, then he has a lot to be proud of, and being a natural athlete anyway, which I am guessing he is, and a former Disney kid, which I know he is, then this has to stand as one of his finest performances. He is the lead in a film packed with massive names and some of the best around, William Baldwin, JT Walsh, Robert De Niro, Donald Sutherland, Rebecca De Mornay, to name but a few. At the front of it all, and driving the film, aside from its obvious firey drama, is the sibling rivalry he has with his younger brother, Brian, (William Baldwin). I found this to be great fun to watch and very honest in its depiction of two brothers who quite simply do not get along. Hey, in reality, brothers and sisters too let''s face it, they fight and they argue people, not all brothers and sisters get along. But I found their tensions and their rivalry to be very believable and wonderfully played. It was like each time they got together, it was like, ''Hey, you''re my brother, but sc*** you''. The pyrotechnic effects of course are awesome. They obviouosly must have had a terrific team for the special effects and they were real too, no cgi, which was at the time, in its infancy. There is an intro by Ron Howard who was going to use cgi, but wanted to test it first, to see if it would look okay, but he thought it looked too fake, so they went with the real thing, and I think they did a fantastic job. Not that I am a fan of the director by the way. There are some directors out there who I am no fan of, but every so often they will come up with one or two great movies, and Ron Howard is one of them. I am no Ron Howard fan, I just don''t think much to the guy, (and if you ever saw the South Bank show with Melvyn Bragg, he looked none too impressed when interviewing the guy either, so I am not alone), but he has made two films which can quite easily go down in movie history as classics and this is one of them, the other being Apollo 13. This looks amazing on blu ray by the way too. I did have a copy on dvd, but traded it for this among others and the difference is there to see. This is an absolute cracker of a thriller, and one of the best, if not the best movies about fire out there today, and definitely Ron Howard''s finest two hours of filmmaking.
